Leather Work Masterclass in the Yorkshire Dales
Join us for a leather work masterclass led by one of the country’s leading leather workers.
Tony has been hand-stitching leather bags and tool sheaths since 2007 using traditional techniques and now produces a selection of hand-stitched leather goods; including bags, cases, wallets and pouches to name a few, using leather from UK hides which have been vegetable tanned in Britain.
During this one-day course Tony will start by guiding participants through a simple project, which will allow the students to learn the basics of leather work.
After which participants will divide into two groups. One group will focus on creating a belt and the other will create a simple notebook, both utilising and reinforcing the skills acquired in their earlier session.
Each belt will be finished with either a solid British brass or stainless-steel buckle and can be either riveted or hand-stitched.
Each bespoke notebook cover will be specifically created to fit a sketchbook, notebook of diary that each student has brought with them for the course.
During the course students will learn about different types of leather and the most common tools to use. They will learn how to cut, dye, edge and treat leather with oils and wax. Depending on the item they choose to make they will learn how to use a strap cutter, how to stitch and rivet, how to fit eyelets and how to make leather cord.
