Things to Do Near Hipping Hall Lancaster Castle
There are some fascinating locations to visit while staying at Hipping Hall, not least some that unearth local history and show what life was like hundreds of years ago.
One of the best examples in the area is Lancaster Castle, also known as John O’ Gaunt’s Castle, is one of the most fascinating ancient buildings in the country, with beginnings dating back to Roman times.
The castle has long played a part in the history of the region, often a central part in many significant events, including the trial of the Lancaster Martyrs, the infamous ‘Lancaster Witches’ trial, and the execution of over 200 souls during it’s time as a working prison.
This dark and grizzly past can be discovered by visitors on a tour around the castle, which takes up to 60 minutes. As well as being stunningly well-preserved, the castle has undergone significant refurbishment, including restoring the old Victorian Clock Tower and a new roof on the debtors’ workshop. There are now all manner of local events taking place at the castle, so it’s worth checking the calendar before attending to see if you can get involved.
